Dusty Simplified Glass

in Overcast Light with Procedural Cork

Weekly Walkthroughs provide a complete project, including geometry, file textures, shading networks, environment maps, gobos, and lighting rigs. The aim is to teach through deconstruction of a fully realized but simple scene. In addition, any of the elements may be used and applied directly to other projects.

Simplified Glass discusses how to use a simple Blinn shader for truly effective glass. Dust on the bottles leads to a concise overview of layering materials, which is further enhanced with Maya fur. Included is a deep discussion of area lights and the principles of raytrace recursion.

When I opened the scene on Maya 2008 (Mac) there were some errors. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

It will open on your Mac just fine. I work with it on my Mac (Maya 8.5) all the time. In fact the file was primarily created on a Mac. The only thing you'll need to do, which I mentioned in the tut, is that unfortunately mix8layers is not available for Intel Mac. So you'll have to assign the Glass_B and Dust materials separately and comp the results. I've got some emails in to various people to compile a mix8layer for OSX Intel, but nothing solid yet.

jeremy,
Sorry to bother you as you're busy and all, but any chance of more tuts? I have the two already and am eagerly looking forward to more.

No bother, that's a compliment. I've been out of town for a bit, but I've got several more coming shortly.

Hi jeremy, Id like to get some feedback cause im trying to create a more transparent glass, but even if i remove the ramps and try to adjust it back to white, it is as if the glass remains white and doesnt have any transparency.

Id also like to know how to remove the reflection at the bottom of bottle and or why it ends so harshly into non transparency.

The tutorial was awesome man, even though i cant really get the glass clearer. Your workflow in the hypershader is wicked and ill be getting some more tuts in the future.

Thanks
Tony
