Lighting a Hallway

Production Techniques for Efficient, Directable Lighting

Emphasizing production concerns, Jeremy lights an interior scene with only 13 lights. He demonstrates in real-time step-by-step how to use a minimal number of spot and point lights to recreate all direct, indirect and "sweetening" light sources for a hallway. This technique uses no Global Illumination or Final Gather, producing a fast, stable, predictable and directable result. Jeremy shows how to work with lighting in IPR and Mental Ray.

Very informative. I use Lightwave 8.5 so some of the features are different and some of it I haven't figured out how to do in LW yet, but I've already gotten a better render out of a test scene I set up. It sure is a lot faster rendering this way! DBMiller

It's 2am and just finished following along with this tutorial. Simply amazing! Thanks Jeremy, you did an excellent job. Definitely one of my top favorite gnomonology tutorials so far. And kudos for using a scene that i could grab off the forums and follow along. It really helped. Hope to see more from tutorials from you soon.

It would be nice to have the source file to practice and test your own results.

Great Tutorial!
I've been usig a different app and am learning Maya, so if I had any crit, it would be to ask you to briefly explain more of the basics as you go along.
For example, that the "filtering" function controls shadow softness...
Also, your MEL shelf looks interesting. I'd be curious if you could just list the Mel scripts you have installed.
Thanx a lot.

Thanks for the comments guys. Hehe Milt, sorry I made you nod off. Just use your FF slider and go to like 1 min 30 sec.

The Maya scene can be grabbed from: http://media.cgnetworks.com/forum/lighting_and_rendering/hauntedhallway_MB.rar

Hi Jeremy,

The link for the Maya scene is dead. Would it be possible to provide a new link with the MB file?

Many thanks.

Great tutorial! Would it be possible to get the textures used in the tutorial? I found the scene, but it is just the maya file, no tetxures. It would help just to compare the results we get while following along. Thanks again for the great tutorial.
